Hands-On Science

scienceLFLA students in 5th and 6th grades are diving into new hands-on learning curriculum this year with a variety of experiments exploring the chemical and physical changes of matter. They have conducted experiments like identifying substances using indicators, and separating mixtures and solutions, among many others. Students have thoroughly enjoyed the hands-on learning, with the Elephant Toothpaste experiment emerging as a clear favorite. This experiment creates a dramatic foam “geyser” by mixing hydrogen peroxide with dish soap and using yeast as a catalyst to rapidly break down the peroxide into water and oxygen, making for a fun and memorable lesson.

In addition to in-class experiments, students are learning through digital platforms like Flocabulary and Generation Genius, alongside the MySci curriculum. Flocabulary has allowed students to creatively apply their vocabulary by composing and performing rap songs in weekly battles, reinforcing their understanding of key concepts.

Growth in both knowledge and enthusiasm for science is evident across all classes. Fifth grade science teacher, Ms. Audrey Tomlin, said: “As a teacher, I’ve always been thrilled to teach Physical and Chemical Changes. LFLA has given me the opportunity to explore more hands-on experiences with my students, and I’m elated. I’m excited to teach about organs and organ systems later this year, and give scholars the opportunity to dissect an animal.”
